Glorious Golden Ghee is a nutritional powerhouse, packed with skin-loving fat-soluble vitamins A, E, and K. Ghee is simply clarified butter, meaning its water and milk content has been removed by slowly simmering it until it turns a rich, nutty golden hue. 

This homemade ghee recipe is both nourishing and flavorful. With just one ingredient and less than 30 minutes of your time, you can easily transform butter into ghee, a simple and versatile everyday staple. Ideal for cooking at high temperatures while adding its beautiful depth of flavor to dishes.

What is Ghee?

Ghee is a form of clarified butter, but it's much more than that. By carefully removing the milk solids and water during the heating process, ghee becomes a concentrated source of healthy fats that are free from lactose and casein. This makes it an excellent option for those with dairy intolerances or sensitivities. What truly sets ghee apart is its unique, nutty flavor and impressive versatility. Whether you’re using it for frying, sautéing, or even as a skincare remedy, ghee is a must-have ingredient for both your kitchen and wellness routine.

How to Make Glorious Golden Ghee 

Making your own Glorious Golden Ghee at home is not only simple, but it's also a healthier and more cost-effective option than store-bought varieties. By making it yourself, you have full control over the quality of the ingredients, ensuring you know exactly what's inside. Using the best organic or grass-fed butter will give you optimal flavor and nutrition. This way, you can enjoy the full health benefits of ghee, knowing it’s made with the highest-quality fats and is free from preservatives or additives.

Ingredients 

  • 500g Unsalted Butter (high-quality, organic, or grass-fed butter is best)

Method

Melt the Butter

Place the unsalted butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-low heat. Allow it to melt completely. As the butter melts, it will naturally separate into three layers: the milk solids will sink to the bottom, the clarified ghee will remain in the middle, and foam will form on the top.

The First Foam

Once the butter has melted, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. As it simmers, the milk solids will begin to separate and float to the top, creating the first foam, which will be milky and frothy. You can either leave the foam as it is, as it will die down, or if you prefer, you can simply move the foam aside to observe the transformation happening below.

The Second Foam

Once the first foam stage has died down, larger golden bubbles will begin to form, gradually turning the butter a deep golden color. The milk solids at the bottom will shift from milky white to a rich amber hue. This transformation gives our Glorious Golden Ghee its name and nutty flavor. You’ll know your ghee is ready when the room smells like fresh-baked croissants, and the ghee is a rich amber color, with the milk solids having a deep amber hue.

Cool and Store

Allow the ghee to cool slightly before carefully pouring it through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer into a clean jar or mold, leaving the solids behind. Personally, I prefer using mini loaf molds, as they make it ideal to store the ghee in the fridge so you can pull out small bars as needed. This method helps preserve the ghee's nutrient density by preventing oxidation.

Storage Tips for Ghee

Ghee can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one month. For longer shelf life, refrigerate it, and it will keep for up to 7 months. Since ghee is butter with its water content removed, it is anhydrous, meaning it doesn't require preservatives and is naturally stable, allowing it to last longer without refrigeration.

Ghee is incredibly versatile. It can be used in place of butter for sautéing, frying, or roasting. With a high smoke point of around 485°F (250°C), ghee is perfect for high-heat cooking, as it won’t burn like traditional butter. You can also drizzle it over vegetables and rice, use it as a spread, or mix it into your morning oatmeal or coffee for an extra boost of heart, skin, and brain-loving nourishment.
